Originally an experimental offshoot of Chicago house music (Phuture’s 1986 Acid Trax was one influential example), acid house came to denote a sensibility that radically altered club culture worldwide. After the Ecstasy-fueled summer of 1987 on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza, several influential British DJs used acid house as a jumping-off point for a new eclecticism. The status-conscious dress codes of ’80s clubbing dissolved in all-night raves, where the fashion statement consisted of baggy jeans and hooded tops with garishly blithe logos, and faceless homemade recordings topped the charts with little radio play or media attention.
(Some critics anointed acid the “new punk,” pointing to its egalitarian, antifashion, experimental, anti-star elements; others called it mindless and apolitical.) The acid house aesthetic was central to California’s nascent rave scene in 1990-91, joining the tradition of American black music that has been exported to Europe, customized, then imported back in a more acceptable form.
